An objective justification for actual infinity?

چکیده
This document is a record of my contribution to a panel discussion which took place on July 27, 2011 as part of the Infinity and Truth Workshop held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore, July 25–29, 2011. In preparation for the panel discussion, Professor Woodin asked each panelist to formulate a yes/no question to be asked of a benevolent, omniscient mathematician. In addition, each panelist was asked to give reasons for his choice of a question. Since I don’t believe in omniscient mathematicians, I chose to interpret “omniscient mathematician” as “wise and thoughtful philosopher of mathematics.” With this change, my yes/no question reads as follows:

Justification of an asymptotic expansion at infinity
A family of asymptotic solutions at infinity for the system of ordinary differential equations is considered. Existence of exact solutions which have these asymptotics is proved.
متن کاملElement of justification in contemporary epistemology
The definition of propositional knowledge has been said to be: "knowledge is belief in justified truth" and belief, truth, and justified are necessary and adequate conditions in the actualization of knowledge. Many faults have been directed towards this three elemental definition, which some of them have been derived from the element of justification. This article reviews some of the most im...
متن کاملJustification by Infinite Loops
In an earlier paper we have shown that a proposition can have a welldefined probability value, even if its justification consists of an infinite linear chain. In the present paper we demonstrate that the same holds if the justification takes the form of a closed loop. Moreover, in the limit that the size of the loop tends to infinity, the probability value of the justified proposition is always...
متن کاملJustification by an Infinity of Conditional Probabilities
Today it is generally assumed that epistemic justification comes in degrees. The consequences, however, have not been adequately appreciated. In this paper we show that the assumption invalidates some venerable attacks on infinitism: once we accept that epistemic justification is gradual, an infinitist stance makes perfect sense. It is only without the assumption that infinitism runs into diffi...
متن کاملCreating mathematical infinities: Metaphor, blending, and the beauty of transfinite cardinals
The infinite is one of the most intriguing, controversial, and elusive ideas in which the human mind has ever engaged. In mathematics, a particularly interesting form of infinity—actual infinity— has gained, over centuries, an extremely precise and rich meaning, to the point that it now lies at the very core of many fundamental fields such as calculus, fractal geometry, and set theory. In this ...
